Beth will give a Distinguished Lecture next Thursday (2/8) at Brown University, Rethinking Ubiquitous Computing to Transform Healthcare. In this talk, she will draw from a number of research projects that integrate computing research, human-centered design, and health management theory to create promising approaches for promoting wellness, supporting behavior change and delivering improved health outcomes.

Led by moderate Dan Lopresti, Beth along with Henning Schulzrinne, Matt Wansley, and Nadya Bliss served on a panel representing computing researchers in academia and industry, making the case for intelligent infrastructure to congressmen, congressional staffers, and other stakeholders. They argued that while infrastructure needs are critical, it would be shortsighted to simply replicate more of what we have. Intelligent infrastructure is the deep embedding of sensing, computing, and communications capabilities into traditional urban and rural physical infrastructures such as roads, buildings, bridges, pipelines, water and electric distribution systems for the purpose of increasing efficiency, resiliency, and safety. The ACM GROUP conference will convene next month for their bi-annual conference. Jessica, in collaboration with Casey Fiesler (UC Boulder), Michael Muller (IBM Research), Pernille Bjorn (Univ. Copenhagen), and Pamela Wisniewski (Univ. Central Florida) will hold a Research Ethics panel. This is the first ever panel for the GROUP conference. Recent ECL alumna Maia Jacobs has been selected as the newest Center for Research on Computation and Society (CRCS) Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University. CRCS is housed in the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. She is currently working with Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science, Krzysztof Gajos. Congratulations Maia!!
Beth will give the Indiana University Informatics Colloquium Lecture next week, Bridging Ubiquitous Computing and Personal Health Informatics to Transform Healthcare. In the talk, she will discuss how healthcare for chronic disease is the dominant cost for many healthcare systems, now and for the foreseeable future. The unique capabilities of pervasive computing technologies have the potential to transform healthcare by shifting care from institutional to home settings, by helping individuals engage in their own care, by facilitating problem solving and decision making, and by creating a network of communication and collaboration channels that extends healthcare delivery to everyday settings. Maia was recently selected as a 2017 Stanford Rising Star in EECS. This workshop brings top graduate and postdoc women in EECS together for scientific discussions and informal sessions aimed at navigating the early stages of an academic career. Jessica has been invited to participate in the Future of Privacy Forum's workshop on responsible research and privacy practices in New York City November 2-3. A partnership with Facebook, Bentley University, and the University of Central Florida, this workshop will bring together over 50 thought leaders from Academia, Government, and Industry to outline research agendas to tackle a diverse set of issues. This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the James D. Foley Scholars Program. Initiated by our own Beth Mynatt during her tenure as the GVU director, this program seeks top graduate students to help shape cutting edge research focused on how people can use computing technology in understanding and improving their daily lives. The Foley Scholars program is the GVU Center’s highest award for student excellence in research contributions to computing.
The Everyday Computing Lab has had 3 Foley Scholars - Andrew D Miller (13), Jessica A Pater (15), and Maia Jacobs (16). All were in attendance to celebrate this year's nominees and winners. Congratulations to the class of 2017!
